The 30% rate everyone quotes applies to standard in-app purchases and first-year subscriptions for developers earning over $1M/year. Most small developers pay a lot less once you know which programs to enroll in.
If your total App Store proceeds across all your apps were under $1M in the previous calendar year, you qualify for a flat 15% commission on everything, no code changes needed. You enroll directly in App Store Connect, and approval typically lands within about 15 days.
Any auto-renewing subscription automatically drops to 15% once a subscriber has been paying continuously for more than 12 months, even if you're not in the Small Business Program.
Apple offers EU developers an "Alternative Terms Addendum" with a lower base commission, 17% standard or 10% for Small Business-eligible developers, but if you still use Apple's own in-app purchase system under these terms, Apple adds a 3% payment processing surcharge on top, making the effective rates 20% and 13%. Developers who move to external payment processing under the EU terms skip that surcharge entirely.
Fee rates and program terms change periodically, and the EU DMA rules in particular have been actively evolving. Always confirm your current rate in App Store Connect before making pricing decisions. This tool provides estimates only and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Apple.
